Introduction:
The Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) has been established under the Science and Technology Policy adopted by the Government of Kerala as self-governing institution to carry on research in fields of forestry, biodiversity etc., that are crucial to the development of the state. The Institute is registered as a society under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Act, 1955.

Kerala Forest Reserch Institute carries out a number of economic, social and environmental targets set by the Government. During the year 2003, KFRI unified with the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) along with five other Research & Development(R&d) Center in Kerala.
 
Location of Kerala Forest Research Institute:
KFRI is located strategically in the middle of a tropical forest at Peechi, about 20 kilometers east of Thrissur, in Central Kerala. The main campus covers a large area in the picturesque reserve forest of the Peechi Forest Range.The Institute's sub-centre is located at Nilambur in North Kerala and a Field Research Station is situated at Velupadam, in Thrissur District.

Facilities offered by Kerala Forest Research Institute :
The Institute boasts of an excellent laboratory for carrying out research in tropical forestry. Some of the other facilities include :
  • Herbarium has a collection of more than 25,000 species of the flora of Kerala
  • Orchidarium and Fern House have a collection of a large number of Orchids & Ferns.
  • Medicinal Plants Garden has more than 300 species of medicinal plants found in Kerala.
  • Insect Collection - More than 1000 specimens of insects are found in Western Ghats are collected here.
  • Wildlife Museum- Holds a rare collection of fresh water fish, amphibians,reptiles and mammals of the adjacent regions.
  • Teak Museum is the only one of its kind in the whole world displaying the history, research and development on Teak.
