Introduction
National Center for Radio Astrophysics (NCAR) Pune an integral part of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) was established in 1989 to contribute effectively in the field of astronomical sciences and astrophysics. Situated 80 kilometers north of Pune, the most spectacular invention of this institute is the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The GMRT is the most powerful radio telescope operating at low radio frequencies. It is a national treasure used by astronomers across the world for several discoveries. The Ooty Radio Telescope is yet another contribution of the research institute. The most important areas that the institute deals with are: Analog and digital electronics, signal processing, antenna design, communication and software development. The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), the academic wing of NCAR Pune conducts several academic programs.
  • Post graduate internship
  • Post Doctoral Program
  • Visiting student Research Program
  • Student Projects
Admission and selection
Students with B.E/B.Tech/M.Tech/M.Sc can apply for the research programs. However selection is done on the basis of a written test and interview.

Main contributions of National Center for Radio Astrophysics,(NCAR) Pune
Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT).
Is the most important discovery of NCAR around which all major research activities revolve. This device is a unique facility for radio astronomical research using the metrewavelengths range of the radio spectrum. The main objectives of GMRT are: to detect the highly redshifted spectral line of neutral Hydrogen expected from protoclusters or protogalaxies before they condensed to form galaxies in the early phase of the Universe and to search for and study rapidly-rotating Pulsars in our galaxy.

The GMRT subsystems

  • Front End System.
  • Feed Position System.
  • Servo System.
  • Telemetry System.
  • Monitor & Control System
  • Local Oscillator System.
  • Feed Position System.
  • Base Band System.
  • Sentinel System.
  • Correlator System.
  • Fibre Optics System.
Other facilities at National Center for Radio Astrophysics,(NCAR)Pune
Researchers at National Centre for Radio Astrophysics can avail the Library facility, recreational Centre, Computer Centre and various national and international seminars.
