Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata owes its origins mainly to the efforts of Prof. M.N. Saha, the renowned Indian scientist whose contributions to the field of Astrophysics is considered as one of the top ten achievements of 20th century Indian science. The Institute, which was originally known as the Palit Research Laboratory in Physics of the University of Calcutta, was converted into a center for Nuclear Research after Prof. Saha had realized the immense potential of nuclear science for betterment of the country.

Introduction:

The Institute of Nuclear Physics became fully functional on 11th January 1950, and was inaugurated by Madame Irene Joliot-Curie, the Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry in 1935. Since then, this autonomous Institute has been carrying out basic research in frontline areas of Physical, Electronic and Biophysical sciences. In the 1980s, the Institute shifted to its new campus in Bidhannagar, and was also renamed as the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, in honor of its founding father, Prof. Meghnad Saha. Currently the Institute has about 125 faculty members, 20 post-doctoral fellows and 80 graduate students with total staff strength of 650
