Introduction
Central Research Institute for Jute & Allied Fibres previously known as Jute Agricultural Research Institute (JARI) started out after the partition of India in 1947. CRIJAF deals with white Jute (Tita pat): Corchorus capsularis L. Tiliaceae; Tossa Jute (Mitha pat): Corchorus olitorius L. Tiliaceae; Mesta/Kenaf (Patsan): Hibiscus cannabinus L. Malvaceae; Roselle (Patwa): Hibiscus sabdariffa L. Malvaceae; Sunnhemp (San): Crotalaris juncea L. Papilionaceae; Ramie (Rheha): Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaud. Urticaceae; Sisal/Agave (Sisal): Agave sislana Perr. Ex Engelm. Agavaceae and Flax (Alsi): Linum usitatissimum L. Linaceae.

Immediately after independence, India's production of raw jute was far too less to satisfy the needs of the jute mills spread across the length and breadth of the country. Therefore, much stress was laid on expansion of the jute area and development of high yielding varieties of jute. Within a short span of time, CRIJAF researchers could release a number of high yielding strains and vastly improve the standard of their production technologies.

Since the year 1960, the productivity of jute fiber has increased progressively and this achievement was possible only due to the fantastic efforts made by the scientists of CRIJAF in various fields like:

  • Plant Breeding and Genetics
  • Agronomy
  • Plant Physiology
  • Soils
  • Pathology
  • Entomology
  • Extension

Research Wings of CRIJAF:
There are several research wings of Central Research Institute for Jute & Allied Fibres spread across several states in India. These research wings of CRIJAF are-

Research Areas of Central Research Institute for Jute & Allied Fibres:
CRIJAF is authorized to carry out research activities in the following fields:

  • Development of jute fibers (C. capsularis and C. olitorius) and allied fibre crops like mesta (H. cannabinus and H.sabdariffa), sunnhemp, (Crotalaria juncea), ramje (Boehmeria nivea) sisal (Agave sisalana) and flax (Linum usitatissimum) for yield and quality.
  • Development of jute and allied fiber crops for biotic and abiotic stresses.
  • Development of economically feasible and sustainable production technology and cropping systems with jute and allied fiber crops.
  • Developing proper post-harvest technology for improvement of the quality of fiber
  • Transfer of technology and human resource development in relation to jute and allied fiber crops
