Introduction:
Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata was established on August 26, 1950 and was one of the first four National Laboratories decided to be set up under the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, the other three being National Chemical Laboratory, Pune; National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi and Central Fuel Research Institute, Dhanbad.
During the 1960s, CGCRI Kolkata shot into limelight in the international arena by working on the development of various types of optical glasses that were used to make lenses and prisms for making periscopes, binoculars, range-finders, gun-sights, fire directors, and scientific, photographic and survey instruments like microscopes, telescopes, cameras, projectors, theodolites etc. In the subsequent years, CGCRI Kolkata worked on the development of laser glass, infra-red transmitting filters, synthetic quartz single crystal, high temperature protective enamels, high alumina ceramic seals and spacers. CGCRI Kolkata's efforts have been instrumental in making the country independent of imports in respect of such material.

Besides, training programs are available in other areas such as Glass Science and Technology, Chemical Analysis of Glass, Ceramic and Allied Materials, Glass Melting and Processing, Pottery Making etc.
