INTRODUCTION:

The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) is one of the constituent national laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR),the premier multidisciplinary Research & Development organisation of the Government of India. It was set up as a semi-autonomous Centre in 1977 in Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, became a full-fledged national laboratory during 1981-82, and was dedicated to the nation on 26 November, 1987 by the then Prime Minister of India late Shri Rajiv Gandhi.

In recognition of its contribution to modern biology, CCMB has been chosen as a Centre of Excellence by (UNESCO)  Global Network for Molecular and Cell Biology (MCBN) and has been designated as a South Centre for Excellence for Research and Training by the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) , Italy. Many prestigious international and national awards have come to CCMB including the CSIR Technology Award (twice) and (FICCI) Award for outstanding achievements in Science & Technology.

Major departments and field of research in CCMB:

The ongoing research programmes at the CCMB are in three major categories - high quality basic research in the frontier areas of modern biology, research relevant to societal needs, and application-oriented research towards commercialisation. These include:

  • Biomedicine & diagnostics
  • Evolution & development
  • Gene regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes
  • Host-parasite interactions
  • Membrane biology
  • Protein structure
  • Bioinformatics
  • Functional genomics
  • Theoretical biology

R & D ACTIVITIES:

The following are the major activities carreid out in the ongoing plan:

  • Environmental and genetic determinants of obesity and diabetes in India
  • Structural and functional diversity of PcG complexes
  • Transcriptional and post-transcriptional transgene silencing: insight mechanism and their interaction
  • Exploring the transfer RNA mediated editing mechanism in class II aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase and its potential use a drug target
  • Mol basis of reversible arrest in skeletal muscle satellite cells in culture and in vivo: identification of genes that uncouple cell cycle exit from the onset of differentiation
  • Role of Cocaine in Neuro-AIDS by HIV-1B and C Clades
  • Identification of DNA markers associated with disease and pest resistance in mulberry cells
  • Barcoding Anurans of India
  • Indain coffee genome research programme
  • Characterization of nuclear matrix RNA in drosophila embryo's
  • Chromatin Transcription of some unusual tRNA genes of the yeast saccharomyces cerevisiae
  • Global regulatory mechanisms of chromatin transcription by yeast RNA polymerase III
  • Maternal vitamin B12 and folate restriction induced changes in body composition, insulin resistance and atherogenic risk in WNIN rat offspring: molecular/epigenetic basis of the changes and validation in Zebrafish model
  • Endogenous adult cardiac stem cells: genome-wide analysis for multipotency and differentiation in homeostasis and regeneration
  • Organization of the serotonin 1A receptor in the membrane environment: exploroing detergent insolubility of serotonin 1A receptors at the cell surface
  • Training programme in molecular biology for personnel involved in works pertaining to aquaculture
  • Human Epigenome Variation: Analysis of CpG island methylation in chromosomes 18 and Y and in Hox and some insulin signalling and chromatin remodelling genes
  • Use of a genetic strategy for identification of synthetic lethal combinations: Role of FtsEX in E.coli

There are also various training programmes, academic programmes, scholarships and fellowships granted to encourage students. The institue has well equipped labs and state-of-art facilities to enable advanced research.
