INTORDUCTION:

 
Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), a premier national laboratory established in 1948, a constituent of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is engaged in carrying out research and development projects on design, construction and maintenance of roads and runways, traffic and transportation planning of mega and medium cities, management of roads in different terrains, improvement of marginal materials, utilization of industrial waste in road construction, landslide control, ground improvements environmental pollution, road traffic safety and analysis & design, wind, fatigue, corrosion studies, performance monitoring/evaluation, service life assessment and rehabilitation of highway & railway bridges. The institute provides technical and consultancy services to various user organizations in India and abroad.
 
MAJOR R & D ACTIVITIES:
  • Dynamic Response of Pre-stressed Concrete Bridges Development of Appropriate Technology with Respect to Bridges in the Context of HillyRegions
  • Determination of the Maximum Rotation Capacity of the RC T-Beam Bridge Girder under the Combined Influence of Flexure, Torsion and Shear
  •  Study of Thermal Effects for the Design of Rigid Pavements through Instrumentation of Concrete Pavements
  •  Development of High Performance Smart Concrete Development of Specifications, Guidelines and Preparation of Manual of Practice for
  • Repair of Cracks and Spalls in the Critical Components of the Concrete Structures under
  • Different Exposure Conditions Creation of National Test Facility, Formulation of Guidelines, Specifications, Manual of Practice for Design and Execution of Bridge Expansion Joints
  • R&D Interactions on the project were made with the following academicians/researchers
  • Fatigue Performance of Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) and Prestress Concrete (PSC)
  • Composite Girder Bridges under Simulated Live Loadin
  • Design, Analysis and Health Assessment of Special Structures Including Bridges
The following are the recently undertaken activities:
  • Quality Assurance and Health Monitoring of 6-Lane Road Way Bridge Over Palam Drain at Dwarka, New Delhi
  • Design of Budhia Nallah Culvert and Retaining Wall at AFNHB Project, Faridabad
  • Monitoring of the Long Spans of the Second Thane Creek Road Bridge (SouthCarriageway), Mumbai, under the Known Superimposed Live Loads
  • Investigation and Rehabilitation of Ravi and Basanter Bridge on Pathankot-Jammu Road
  • Long Term Performance Monitoring of Lok Nayak Setu at I.T.O., New Delh.
  • Design and Fabrication of Road Condition Evaluation Equipment for A.P. Govt.
  •  Calibration of Axle Mounted Roughness Measuring Device

For capacity building of human resources in the area of highway Engineering to undertake and execute roads and runway projects, Institute has the competence to organize National & International Training Programmes continuing education courses since 1962 to disseminate the R&D finding to the masses.
