Introduction:
Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bangalore is the spine of the electrical industry of India. Established by the Government of India in 1960, with the primary objective of providing assistance to the electrical industry of the country, the Institute presently plays an integral role in the applied research of electrical power and acts as a governing body for quality assurance.

 

The Institute has Mr. Anil Razdan as its Director and several eminent personalities from the industry, academic and research organizations and the bureaucracy on whose hands the reins are vested. It is one of the pioneer institutes to be accredited with several certifications like ISO 9001:2000,NABL, UL, CB & CSA certification. It also has a couple of patents to its name and is a corporate member in the DNP users group- DLMS UA Geneva. The Institute boasts of workforce that includes over 300 eminent scientists and experienced engineers all committed to usher an upheaval in the scenario of electrical energy in India.

Research and Development:
CPRI has been a major player in the segment of research and development that is supposed to be the trademark of the institute. The important research projects that CPRI had undertaken are-

  • Research scheme on Power: Initiated by the ministry of Power this research has started since 2001 and aims to provide substantial support in the management of power in the country.
  • Research Contingency Projects: Funded by the Ministry of Power these projects are undertaken for augmentation of research and testing facilities, improvements / new techniques in testing/diagnostic methods/research studies, product / process improvements, improvement in product standardization.
  • National Perspective Plan: Under the purview of the ministry of power these various projects intend to give a projection of the power industry in terms of the future development and scope of improvement.
  • R&D Thrust Areas in Power Sector: These projects mainly focus on the auxilliaries of the electrical industry without which power generation is incomplete viz: Generation, Transmission and Distribution

Consultancy:Under the consultancy services CPRI plays a significant role in the various areas like:
Field Services which include Plant Evaluation,Performance evaluation,Testing of Equipment,Data Analysis,Cost Benefit Analysis,Recommendation on energy Conservation.

Consultancy and Field Testing Projects executed by Diagnostics, Cables and Capacitors division which includes the institutes' expertise lent to other provincial organisations.

International Assignments at Central Power Research Institute(CPRI), Bangalore:
CPRI has also played important role in conducting research studies for several international Institutions. Apart from that it has also rendered its testing services and also acted as a certification body.
Some important international clients of CPRI include Davis Quantec, MEMF Saudi Arabia M/s. Sharq Steel Rolling Mills, Sohar, Oman etc.
