INTRODUCTION:

 
National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR) came into existence   on 30 September 2002 with the merger of National Institute of Science Communication (NISCOM) and Indian National Scientific Documentation Centre (INSDOC). Both NISCOM and INSDOC, the two premier institutes of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), were devoted to dissemination and documentation of S&T information
 
Now, with the formation of NISCAIR, all the above multi-faceted activities have been amalgamated, making NISCAIR, an institute capable of serving the society using modern IT infrastructure in a more effective manner and taking up new ventures in the field of science communication, dissemination and S&T information management systems and services. Broadly the core activity of NISCAIR will be to collect/store, publish and disseminate S&T information through a mix of traditional and modern means, which will benefit different segments of society
 
CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FIELD OF SCIENCE:
 
Communication of scientific knowledge through research publications forms an integral part of any research program. At the same time, to reap the benefits of the scientific research, the scientific knowledge has to be communicated to the masses through different publications. To fulfil this requirement, NISCAIR endeavours to communicate scientific information to a wide section of Indian society through its various publications.

With an objective of catering to scientific research community, the institute brings out 17 primary and two secondary scientific journals of international repute. The institute also brings out three popular science magazines in Hindi, English and Urdu to meet the scientific quest of the masses. Encyclopaedic volumes of "The Wealth of India" and "Bharat Ki Sampada", which deal with the natural resources of the country, cater to the needs of enterpreneurs, progressive farmers, students, researchers, etc. NISCAIR also brings out CSIR News and CSIR Samachar.

Services and Activities:
 
National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR)   is devoted to science communication, dissemination and S&T information management systems and services using modern IT infrastructure. Broadly the core activity of NISCAIR is to collect/store, publish and disseminate S&T information through a mix of traditional and modern means, which benefits different segments of society.
 
The institute offers wide range of information services ranging from literature search to production and printing of S&T publications.The institute has strong Human Resource Development Programme for training personnel in library & information science, documentation, science communication and herbarium techniques.
 
NISCAIR also undertakes projects on turnkey basis for other organizations. The projects cover design and development of databases, automation and modernization of libraries, editing and production of various publications like journals, books, conference proceedings, annual reports, etc.

Human Resource Development:

National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR) has been providing human resource development programmes for the last several decades. Equipped with the necessary facilities and manpower, NISCAIR is ideally placed to provide training on modern aspects of library and information science, science communication and science popularization for meeting the challenges of current times. NISCAIRs HRD Programmes are broadly categorized as follows: 

  • Associateship in Information Science (AIS) 
  • Short-Term / Attachment / On-site Training Programme
  • AIS Admission 2009
