INTRODUCTION:

 
Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) (formerly: Industrial Toxicology Research Centre), Lucknow, a constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, was established in 1965.IITR undertakes research in niche areas of toxicology. These include the impact of industrial and environmental chemicals on human health and ecosystem, and environmental monitoring of pollutants in air, water and soil. The institute also helps regulatory bodies to formulate/amend guidelines for safe use of chemicals/products, and ensures that the common man is benefited. The motto of the laboratory is "Safety to Environment & Health and Service to Industry.
 
IITR provides a unique platform to public and entrepreneurs for getting answers to all their queries and concerns regarding the safety / toxicity of chemicals and products. This is accomplished through its scientific and technical expertise and the state-of-art facilities conforming to Good Laboratory Practices using National and International guidelines.

TECHNOLOGIES TRANSFERRED:

  • Water Analysis Kit: A one piece kit for physico-chemical and bacteriological analysis of water to determine the drinking water quality from public health point of view in rural areas
  • Mobile Laboratory Van: A mobile water quality testing laboratory for physico chemical and bacteriological assessment of potable water in villages and remote areas.
  • Amrit Kumbh: It is a household low cost water filtration assembly to combat the problems of water borne diseases particularly in rural areas. The disinfection process is based on physico-chemical principles and does not change the minerals in water
  • CD-Strip: A colour detection strip for the detection of Butter yellow, a carcinogenic dye in mustard oil. It can be used by the housewives as well as for random preliminary checks by the health authorities
  • Bact-O-Kill: An electronic device for disinfection of water

FACILITIES:

  • Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer: This is one of the most extensively employed techniques for determination of trace element in all kinds of environmental biological and food samples of complex matrices
  • DNA Sequencer: This is a 16-capillary automated sequencer which can sequence 16 samples simultaneously in single run. This machine is capable of reading and storing the data and results with lower percentage of errors
  • cDNA Microarray: Facility for cDNA microarray analysis provides complete technology platform for transcriptrome analysis that includes RNA extraction, probe labelling and hybridization, scanning, image analysis, data processing
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrophotometer: Inductive coupled plasma is one of the most efficient techniques among the simultaneous determination of multiple trace elements. The instrument can simultaneously analyze up to 45 elements at sub ppm levels in environmental and biological samples.
  • Protein Sequencer: This facility provides support in the separation, quantification, identification and characterization of expressed proteins in biological samples.
  • Denaturing High Performance Liquid Chromatography: Denaturing High Performance Liquid Chromatography is the robotic method to screen the variations/ mutations from its wild type. The analysis is based on the principle that from a column, partially denatured hetroduplexes elutes earlier that non-denatured homoduplexes. Elution profiles that differ from the wild type or reference DNA indicate the presence of mutations or polymorphisms.
  • Multimode Plate Reader : Multimode Plate Reader IITR acquired a 'Multi mode plate reader' with monochromator based absorbance and filter base fluorescence gadget, including luminiscence. It has a reading time of 15 sec. for 96 well plate, 30 sec for 384 well plate and 60 sec for 1536 well plates. The limit of detection is <1 fmol /well fluorescence top and bottom. It can accommodate 8 filters for excitation and 8 for emission. There are 2 injector built in the system for luminiscence mode and has a detection limit of 0.5 fmol / well ATP.

A number of courses are offered for the CSIR-UGC-NET, DBT-JRF and ICMR-NET-JRF qualified students for pursuing a PhD programme at IITR in the following areas:
