GATE, known as the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an entrance examination conducted for students aspiring to make it into Post Graduate programmes in Engineering and Technical studies into countrys private as well as premier public institutions such as Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), National Institute of Technology (NIT), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) functioning under the ambit of Ministry of Human Resource Development.    


Significance: Students should not consider this examination only as a gateway to M.E and M.Tech studies. As, good scores in the examination is considered for Group - A officer positions in Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) which is considered equivalent to government institutions.   


Eligibility: It is a must to possess a UG degree in Engineering or Technical or Architecture. Candidates having PG degree in Science or Mathematics or Statistics or Computer Science are also eligible to take up the exam. Students in the final year can apply for this examination that has no age restriction.   


How to apply: Students can apply for this examination only online through the official website site.  


The examination is of 3 hours duration, and contains a total of 65 questions worth a maximum of 100 marks. From 2014 onward, the examination is carried out in an online Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. The questions consist of both multiple choice questions and numerical answer type questions.


The syllabus covers:


General Aptitude (common for all disciplines): language and analytic skills


Verbal Ability: English grammar, sentence completion, verbal analogies, word groups, instructions, critical reasoning and verbal deduction.


Numerical Ability: Numerical computation, numerical estimation, numerical reasoning and data interpretation.


GATE results are usually declared about one month after the examinations are over. The score is valid for 3 years from the date of announcement of the GATE results.


The examination is conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur and Kharagpur.


Examination dates for GATE 2019: 2,3, 9, 10 February 2019


Results to be released: 16 March, 2019
