The primary objective of Central Council of Indian Medicine is to establish, guide, develop and sustain and to maintain standards and quality of academic study programmes and practice of Indian System of Medicine to national as well as global needs.
Since its establishment in 1971, the Central Council has been framing and implementing various regulations including the Curricula and Syllabii in Indian Systems of Medicine viz. Ayurved, Siddha and Unani Tibb at Under-graduate and Post-graduate level.
The Sowa Rigpa System of Medicine is included in the Central Council of Indian Medicine from the year 2012.
Main objectives: -
To prescribe minimum standards of education in Indian Systems of Medicine viz. Ayurved, Siddha, Unani Tib and Sowa Rigpa.
To recommend Central Government in matters relating to recognition (inclusion/withdrawal) of medical qualifications in/from Second Schedule to Indian Medicine Central Council.
To prescribe Standards of Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Code of Ethics to be observed by the practitioners.
To consider and furnish the recommendation to Government of India on proposal received from various institutes from Government of India for establishment of new colleges to increase intake capacity in Under-graduate, Post-graduate and to start new or Post-graduate additional subjects.
VAIDYA
YADAVJI TRIKAMJI AWARD
The Central Council of Indian Medicine instituted Vaidya Yadavji Trikamji Award in 2014 to perpetuate his memory to recognize the best talents in the field of Ayurveda. The award invites teachers.
The Award is of the value of Rs.1,00,000/- and a Medal for their outstanding service in the field of Ayurveda.
HAKIM
AJMAL KHAN AWARD
The Central Council of Indian Medicine instituted Hakim Ajmal Khan Award Fund to perpetuate his memory to recognize the best talents in the field of Unani. The award invites nominations from Indians in the field of Unani, Eminent Person in Unani Science, Eminent Unani Teachers.
The Award is of the value of Rs.1,00,000/- and a Medal for their outstanding service in the field of Unani.
ACHARYA AWARD
To recognize the merit of an Eminent Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha Teachers, Management Committee has decided to give five awards in Ayurveda, two awards in Unani and one award in Siddha to Eminent teachers in the respective systems.
The value of the award is Rs. 25,000/- and a medal for each awardees.

The Central Council of Indian Medicine has newly created Young Researcher Award.
