Functioning  in Kochi, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam, with Kovai as its head quarters, National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) is highly prominent research center among the  37 Council of Scientific and Industrial Research centers.

Features: This multi-disciplinary institution that was established on 1 Jan, 1966, has escalated to be one of the top global research institutions in Oceanography.

This institution has come out with over  5000 research publications that carries out major research activity in the Indian Ocean to find out its important features.  

Over 200 scientist of this organisation have been involved in various several technological findings and other studies related to the oceans. The most salient feature is that this is the only CSIR institution that carries out research activities in the oceans. 

Important Research Departments:  The important departments that are involved in research studies are Biological, Chemical, Geological / Geo- Physics and Physical Engineering, Marine Instrumentation and Marine Archeology. 

Courses offered: It offers Phd programmes in Marine Biology, Eco Toxicology, Bio-Invasion, Marine Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Marine Chemistry, Marine Geology & Geo-Physics, Physical Oceanography, Ocean Engineering, Marine Instrumentation and Marine Archeology.

Eligibility: Must have obtained degrees such as Msc, BE, B.Tech, MA Marine Archeology from a recognised Indian institution as well as a pass in any one of the national scholarship exam.

Admission: Every year eligible candidates are selected for Phd programmes after a formal  interview conducted in the month of June/ July.

Generally, notification regarding this is issued in the month of April and all application process is completed by May.

Internship: NIO offers short internship scope in few Oceanography divisions for students pursuing UG as well as PG. Students can apply for this through online with appropriate certificates.
