HC quashes Puducherry govt order on a law college- 16-Aug-2013

Chennai: The Madras High Court quashed a Puducherry government order transferring the control of Government Law College from the Education Department to Law Department and set December 31 deadline to provide required infrastructure to the institute.

Justice K K Sasidharan who set aside the January 27, 2000 order of the Puducherry Government bringing the administrative control of the institute under the Law Department without  bringing amendments to the Rules of Business.
    
"The Government should intervene in the matter and take effective and timely action to restore the glory of this pioneer law institution. Defects pointed out by the Pondicherry University and Bar Council of India (BCI) should be set right," the Judge directed the Chief Secretary and Education Department to take steps to improve working of the Law College.
    
The Judge directed that the government appoint a principal on regular basis through the UPSC, fill up nine post of lecturers and appoint four lecturer posts in non-law subjects, non-teaching staff and provide infrastructure facilities like canteen and hostel facilities by December 31.
    
He also directed that the Pondicherry University should extend provisional affiliation to the institution within three days to enable the college to admit students.
