Madurai: The Madras High Court here directed the state government to extend free bus pass scheme to students in government law colleges within two weeks, a facility currently provided to their counterparts in arts and engineering colleges.

The High Court's Madurai Bench comprising justices N Paul Vasanthakumar and P Devadoss, allowing a petition filed by V Thisai Indhiran, ruled "the petitioner is justified in contending that there is discrimination in extending free bus pass to students, treating the students community based on their admission in different courses and deny free bus pass to the law college students."

The judges rejected the contention of the government advocate that extending free bus pass to any category of students was a policy decision and the petitioner was not justified in approaching the court without giving time to
government.

The petitioner's advocate submitted that the Transport Corporation has issued free passes to students studying in government arts and engineering colleges from June 15, 2012 to 27.2 lakh students which cost the exchequer Rs 303.84 crore, but the law college students were not covered under the scheme.
