For the past fifty years due to radical technological progession, the field of Medicine has undergone a sea of changes. Diagnosis of diseases, medical equipments, medicines and vaccines have all been changed.  Now the hospitals require the assistance of Clinical Engineers to use the tools skillfully and administer them adeptly.

The Clinical Engineers render advice to the hospitals for the purchase of new equipments. They also render services on installation and checking of the equipments. They also need to know technological problems that occur in the medical environment.  In the MTech. Clinical Engineering course,  along with the Engineering training,  techniques related to medicine are also taught. Chennai IIT, Vellore Christian Medical College and Sri Chitrathirunal Institute for Medical Science and Technology at Trivandrum, as a joint venture offer this M. Tech course.

The students are selected through entrance examinations and interview organized at the national level. During the two and a half years of study, the students receive training in these three institutions.  The Clinical Engineers ascertain the usage of medical equipments safely and deftly. Since they have to face problems in medical environment, they are given training in such an atmosphere. A  Doctor meets them periodically, trains and tests them.

For this course, nearly Rs 50,000 is collected as fees. On completion of this course,  a person has a chance to enter hospitals or organizations that manufacture medical equipments.  Hospitals vie with one another to render best services. In such a situation, even at start, to give a salary of Rupees seven to twelve lakhs per annum is not hesitated. One can start as a Management Administrator and raise to the level of a Researcher.
