Font Size :

Human communication is carried out through language by means of oral and written medium.

In oral communication, you have listening and speaking skills.

Listening is a highly important and difficult skill to master that comprises 80% of the communication skills.

A Turkish proverb says, Listening requires more intelligence than speaking.

Listening skills can be developed through constant training and practice.
If you really aspire to be a good leader, you need to be a good listener. Listening and leadership are inseparable.

Listening calls for an extreme amount of hard work, requiring full concentration and energy from you.

Let us see some barriers that hinder listening:

  • Finding fault with the speaker
  • Trying to outsmart the speaker by giving information early; asking questions to distract the speaker; or even hurting the speaker at times.
  • An attitude of, I know everything
  • Lack of interest in the subject
  • Day dreaming or absent mindedness
  • Hijacked mind (co-lateral thinking while listening)
The only solution to all these problems is to learn how to pay careful attention.
