The service of the nurses clad in spotless, bright uniform is deemed as a highly respectful and noble job.  They appear as merciful angels to the old people, sick patients and physically handicapped persons. Their hearts are fulfilled when the patients show their gratitude even for the little help they render.

A century ago, Lady Florence Nightingale observed that the nurses were only administrators of medicines and did the job of bandaging small injuries.

In course of time the doctors required more service from the nurses.  The need for nurses also increased because of the augmentation of more number of hospitals and special clinics.  The nurses job is indispensable for the comfort and consolation of the body and mind of the patients.  Apart from this, prevention of disease,  healthcare improvement and counselling the individual, his family and society are some of the job requirements of the nurse.

Due to increasing urbanization and failure in joint family system, the importance of nurses got amplified.  The nurses also perform jobs such as handling of medical equipments, administering the appropriate medicines at the correct time and in exact mesurement and so on.

They render medical aid to the patients on the advice of the doctors.  They also report to the doctors periodically, the health condition of the patients. To serve as a Nurse, one must have done either a Diploma in Nursing in a recognized Nursing Institute or a Degree course in Nursing.  Moreover, they should have registered their names to work as  Nurses.  After the completion of studies, both the doctors and the nurses take a pledge that they would serve the patients truly and with a service mind.  The Nursing Service is regularised by the Indian Nursing Council.

According to the 1947 Indian Nursing Council Law, the Indian Nursing Council was begun as a legally sanctioned organization.  At present, there are more than one thousand Nursing colleges in our country.  In more than 60 colleges of the 300 supplementary Nursing institutes, Postgraduate course in Nursing is offered.

Every year, approximately 30 thousand Nurses and 15 thousand Assistant Nurses pass in the Nursing course.  In the Nursing Council of the different states, more than 9 lakhs Nurses and 5 lakhs of Assistant Nurses have registered their names.  With Lady Florence Nightingale as their role-model, those who are in the Nursing job continue to provide best service.
