National Tsing Hua Varsity unveils new era of global graduate education- 16-Jan-2014
Chennai: After months of deliberations between National Tsing Hua University (NTHU,) a top research university in Hsin Chu, the science city of the Republic of China (Taiwan,) and five world-class universities in as many countries, joint-Ph.D. degree programs between them were finally unveiled recently.
According to Academician Lih J. Chen, President of NTHU, who said that “This is a watershed moment for NTHU as an outstanding research university Research universities globally in the 21st century are increasingly and rapidly facing new demands, challenges and responsibilities. To carry out research at the highest qualities with the aim to mitigate global issues in all dimensions, from science to social science, from humanities to engineering, from bio-science to life-science, can no longer merely be an “in-house” issue.”
The five universities include Université de Technologie de Troyes; UTT from France; Technion – Israel Institute of Technology from Israel, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras from India, University of Waterloo from Canada and University of Liverpool from United Kingdom.
President Chen further explains that "in order for NTHU’s research communities to work on world-class problems to mitigate world-class challenges; we need to create a landscape in which intellectual synergies with world-class universities at all corners of the globe can be proactively fermented. We need to develop new mindset of global strategy to render doctoral “training” as an integral part of our teaching mission. With this as our underpinning, I cannot think of anything that can be better than to establish joint and sustainable Ph.D. programs with the best of the best globally. In these programs, our outstanding faculty members will enter into long term joint research programs with profound global flavor with these five universities from Europe, North America and Asia and with doctoral students from all continents serving as intellectual go-betweens! This is truly exciting!”
National Tsing Hua University is a research university with a long and proud tradition. Since the re-establishment in Hsinchu in 1956, the university has been known for her excellent academic programs as well as her spacious verdant campus.
