Nursing is a field that looks after with concern individual patients, patients in family, group and society during their illness, as well as preventing them from sickness.

Nurses carry out important duties like taking care of the weak, handicapped, besides health improvement and prevention of diseases. The service of the Nurses is of prime importance in the treatment of the patients.  For instance, they play a pivotal role in any hospital from the General ward to the Operation Theater in discharging their duties on par with the doctors. Earlier, there  was a  mistaken notion that those who did not get admission in the medical colleges went for the Nursing course.

However, though Nursing and Medical are interrelated fields,  it requires different   talents and mental attitude to get involved in both.   Generally, the relationship between the Doctors and patients is of short duration. But, the Nurses maintain good relationship with the patients and spend considerable time with them.

In India, the need for trained Nurses has been steadily increasing both in the government and private hospitals.They have  sufficient scope in  job opportunities. To cope with the demand, numerous Nursing schools and colleges are increasingly coming up to train nurses.  Since a persons evaluation about Nursing is changing, numerous young people now consider this as an interesting field and readily join this course.

Courses and Qualification

Nursing education is offered in different levels such as Diploma, Degree and Postgraduate courses. To join BSc Nursing, one must have studied Biology, Chemistry and Physics in Plus two.  The same qualification is essential to join Midwifery and GNMGeneral Nursing.  To become a teacher, one can join MSc Nursing.

Nursing Related Courses

BSc Nursing is the basic course, in which the fundamental techniques of First Aid, Nursing and midwifery are taught.  It also provides Theoretical and Practical training. 

GNM:  In the General Nursing and Midwifery course, the syllabus is framed in such a way to create first grade nurses.

ANMHW:   Auxiliary Nurse, Midwife and Health Workers course is conducted    to instruct hygiene and health related aspects of individuals, children and mothers living in rural areas.

Diploma in Nursing: Those who have done studies equivalent to the tenth can join this course. This is generally a course with one or two years duration.

 

Job Opportunities:

There are opportunities for trained and talented nurses throughout the world. Since the Indian Government is concerned with the creation of Healthcare Network, it is speculated that the need for those in this field will be steadily increasing. 

At present, the Corporate organizations show interest to associate themselves in this field.  Hence, there are bright future for those persons collaborating in this field. Now, in India the nurses-patients ratio  is very low. To balance this, it is estimated that more than six lakhs nurses may be required in the next few years time.

Abundant chances for nurses are awaiting in government and private hospitals, Nursing Homes, Sanatorium, Clinics, Childcare Centers, Schools, Colleges, Health related Orphanages, Old-age Homes and NGO organizations. The Nursing field offers good salary.

Salary depends upon the training and talent a person possesses. We can see that those who have studied at Nursing schools and Colleges receiving good salary. Those who have completed Nursing course get good job chances abroad.  However, to work there they must have completed BSc or MSc. Especially in UK, USA, and Middle East Countries, there is always a need for Nurses. Nursing course can be done at many colleges in Tamilnadu.
