Geology is a study of science that deals with earths origin, composition, history and the mineral composition it contains.

People pursuing studies about this are called Geologist. Geologists play an important role in finding earths mineral resources and other natural resources.

Geology has many sub-divisions like Structural Geology, Mineralogy, Planetology and Geological Engineering.  Geologists provide vital details in laying railway tracks, roads, bridges and buildings. Similarly, they play an important role in identifying the resources and natural gases under the sea. They carry out geo-physical test and geo-chemical that helps to understand the nature of earths soil and expose it to the world.  

Nature of Job:
The important duty of the geologists is to foretell the damages about happen to the environment due to natural calamities and to identify the nature of resources found under the sea. The geologists play an imperative part in the construction of railway tracks, roads, bridges, buildings that form the backbone of the countrys infrastructure.

In developing nations like India, the need for geologists is constantly increasing. Those who have completed studies in geology can work in any one of the positions such as Geologist, Meteorologist, Geographer, or Oceanographer.

After completing fundamental studies in geology and according to the area of work, individuals can pursue further studies and specialize in Petrology, Paleontology, Geo-physics, Mining, Environmental Education, Research and Field study.

Courses:
Studies in this field can be carried out as Under Graduate Degree or Post Graduate degree. To pursue Under Graduation in this field, it is necessary to have studied Physics and Chemistry in Plus two. It is essential to have done Under Graduation in the same field to study Post Graduation. 

Twenty years back, many educational institutions did not offer these courses. But, in the last few years several colleges and educational institutions have started to provide these courses. It is possible carry out research studies like Ph.d for those who have completed M.Sc., or M,.Tech in this field.

Depending on the individuals requirement and residing place, the following geological studies can be carried out through any Un`iversity of the individuals interest

It is understandable that the Geologist is compelled to go out to several different places for their work. Hence, they have to stay away from their home for several days. Therefore, the basic objective of the job is to possess good health and the capacity to drive away mental depression.

 
Opportunities:
It is surely challenging to works as geologist. But, this field provides excellent salary / income in the present scenario. Several job opportunities are available in Private organizations and in Govt departments of India for Geographer, Meteorologist and Oceanographer.

In the central Govt it is possible to join in a good position as an officer after passing the Geological Survey of India Service examination. Institutions like Coal India Ltd, Mineral Exploration Authority, O.N.G.C, and Hindustan Zinc that involve in mineral research activities employ several geologists.

Even the defense and Para-military forces that are involved in the countrys security activities depend extensively on geologists. On the whole, the underlying truth is that those who have completed Geology can obtain good jobs in various departments of India.


Salary:
Like any other department, skill and qualification decides the salary of the person. Geologists today get good opportunities in private sectors also, apart from Central Govt jobs. Experts in this field get excellent opportunities in companies like Reliance and O.N.G.C.
