FDDI was established under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India in 1986 with an objective to provide human resource and technical services to the industry. FDDI was upgraded to an Institute of National Importance by an act of parliament in 2017.
Objective:
To Develop Human Resources within the country by imparting appropriate knowledge and skills to promote the rapid growth of footwear and allied industry in the country.
To provide and develop appropriate infrastructure for the Indian footwear industry to enable it attain international standards of production and
To particularly promote the growth of export production of quality footwear and allied products from the country.

FDDI has campuses at Noida, Fursatganj (Raebareli), Chandigarh, Ankleshwar, Guna, Chennai, Patna, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Rohtak,
Chhindwara and Jodhpur.

Eligibility for admission to Bachelor Degree Programmes (B.Des. / BBA)
Candidate need to have passed 10+2, in any stream, from any recognized Board; or National Open School or three years full time Diploma after Class X offered any recognised institution
Eligibility for Admission to Master Degree programmes (M.Des./ MBA)
For Master of Design (M. Des.) in Footwear Design & Production: A Bachelors Degree in Footwear/Leather Goods/Design/ Fashion/Fine arts/ Architecture/ Engineering/ Production / Technology.
For Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Retail & Fashion Merchandise : A Bachelors Degree in any discipline.
