The Indian Maritime University was established in 2008 under the auspices of the Union Ministry of Shipping with its headquarters in Chennai.


Objective: The University aims to facilitate and promote maritime studies, training, research and extension work with focus on emerging areas of studies like oceanography, maritime history, maritime laws, maritime security, search and rescue, transportation of dangerous cargo, environmental studies and other related fields.


Campuses: The University has six campuses at Navi Mumbai, Mumbai Port, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Kochi. Apart from these, 17 educational institutions across the country function with the accreditation of this university.

Qualifications: Educational qualifications vary according to the course. Generally, however, to be eligible for admission to B.Tech it is must to have passed with 60% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in class XII. Fitness test as well as age limit will be taken into consideration.


Admission Procedure: Admission to programmes offered at Indian Maritime University and other institutions affiliated to the university except BBA is based on a general entrance examination called IMU-CET. 


Examination Centers: The examination centers for the computer based entrance test are set up in 84 cities including Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai, Trichy, Thanjavur and Bangalore.
