Geospatial picking up higher momentum in various fields- 27-Jun-2014

Coimbatore: Applications of geospatial technologies in various fields picked up higher momentum with the advancement in Remote Sensing (RS) and development in Geographical Information System (GIS) and Global Positionng System (GPS), a Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) offficial said here.

Dr V P Duraisami, Special Officer, Directorate of Natural Resources Management of TNAU said this would help to develop important data base on the natural resources of India, which will support inmportant decision making in various development programmes and management activities.
    
He was inaugurating a 21-day training programme under Natural Resources Data Management System (NRDMS), organised by Department of Science and Technology (DST).     

Though there has been tremendous growth in this technology domain, the human resource base however is lacking behind the demand, he said.
    
Geospatial technology encompassing RS, GIS and GPS, have been providing greater utility in monitoring natural resources and environment, he said.
     
DST is keen in developing human resources in the applications of geospatial technology and NRDMS and 21 scientists, teachers, technical officers from ICAR institutes, State Agricultural Universites, Engineering Colleges and Department of Agriculture of states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi and Tamil Nadu are participating in the programme.
