IISER for basic scientific studies - 19-Oct-2009
There are specialized central govt educational institutions that are functioning for studies like Engineering, Medicine and Management.
Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) is a central Govt initiative to encourage fundamental scientific studies and researches. IISER has been established in five places across India.
They are found in Kolkotta in West Bengal, Pune in Maharashtra, Mohali in Punjab, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and Trivandrum in Kerala. Initially, IISER started to function at Kolkotta campus of IIT, Karagpur.
IISER, Pune operated from the campus of National Chemical Laboratory, Pune. IIESR, Mohali, functioned from the campus of Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration. Presently, they have established their own campus.
IISER, Kolkotta has been established in a sprawling 250 acres. Integrated B.S, M.S studies, two year M.S, and integrated Ph.d and research studies for doctorates are various courses available here.
Integrated MS and Phd studies are available at IISER institutions of Bhopal, Mohali, Pune and Trivandrum. Started equivalent to this are the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) that is situated in Bhuvaneshvar at an expanse of 300 acres of land. In this institution, integrated MSc studies, integrated MSc, Phd studies and Phd studies are offered.
In both these educational institutions Under Graduation studies are not available. NISER was started at the expense of Rs 800 crore. Both IISER and NISER are managed by the Central Govts Department of Atomic Research. Till now, admission into IISER was based on test like Kishore Vaigyanik ProtSahan Yojana, Indian National Olympiad and IIT- JEE.
From the next academic year, a separate entrance examination would be conducted to join IISER. National Internal Screening test is obligatory to join in NISER.
