Centre of excellence for Odia language to be set up: Naveen- 18-Sep-2014
Bhubaneswar: Indicating establishment of a centre of excellence for development of Odia language in the state, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today said weakness in language at primary stage cannot sustain quality technological super-structure.
Patnaik said this while releasing a book -'Languages and Cultural Diversity', written by Professor Debi Prasanna Pattanayak here. He said the government is contemplating to establish a centre of excellence for development of Odia language.
Stating that weakness in language at primary stage hinders ability to learn and leads to stunted personal development, Patnaik said "mother tongue based education improves access to education, facilitates learning a second or foreign language, improves internal educational efficiency and improves children's self-confidence and identity.
"Weakness in language at primary stage cannot sustain quality technological super-structure," he said adding that mother tongue is the best medium to start learning especially during primary education of a child.
"This has been accepted in the UN document 1953 to which India is also a signatory," he said, adding Odisha stands on the forefront of all States which has initiated multilingual education among 26 tribal language speakers.
"Our English teachers should find out methodology to teach two or three languages in one class," the Chief Minister said.
Patnaik said his government is committed to the development of Odia language, literature and culture. "Odia language has been declared as a classical language establishing its ancient origin, extensive evolution and richness. A high level committee has been set up taking eminent scholars, researchers to suggest modalities for taking further steps for development of Odia language," he said.
