According to the recent performance index survey report released by the Ministry of Education, Tamil Nadu has gone down in education standards. Tamil Nadu scored 906 points in 2019-20 and is lagging behind by scoring 855 points in 2020-21 out of the total 1000 points!

Importance:

The study conducted by the Union Ministry of Education is aimed at formulating proper policies and ensuring quality education to all students across the country.

The PGI points will help states and UTs to identify gaps in the education system and ensure that school education is of highest quality at all levels, the Ministry of Education said.

This 'grading' system to indicate standard was introduced in 2017-18.

What is PGI?

The Educational Performance of all the states and union territory across the country is calibrated into Performance Grading Index (PGI) based various parameters by the Ministry of Education, India.

Also, the Performance Grading Index - PGI is a comprehensive analysis of the schooling system across the country.

Study Method:

According to this, the PGI is calculated for a total of 1000 points across 70 indicators in five domains namely Learning Outcome (LO), Accessibility (A), Infrastructural Facilities (IF), Equity (E) and Governance Process

(GP). The PGI report for the year 2020-2021 has been brought out based on data from multiple sources, such as viz., Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE +) 2020-21, National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2017, MDM Portal and data provided by MIS Co-ordinators of the respective States /UTs.

Research findings:

Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Chandigarh, Maharashtra, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh retained their places in the list of top seven performing states in the country. These seven states are ranked 2nd with 901-950 points.

Decline:

But Tamil Nadu, which was among the top five states in PGI in 2019-20, has slipped to third grade in 2020-21 with poor scores in equity, infrastructure and governance. The overall score decreased from 906 in 2019-2020 to 855 in 2020-2021. Most importantly, no state has scaled to first grade scoring between 951-1000 points.
