Indian Institute of Technology, Madras offers an online B.S. course in the promising field of Data Science.

Significance: Remarkably, it is the world's first 4-year B.S.- Data Science and Applications course offered by the country's top technical institute with the opportunity to graduate with either a Diploma or a B.Sc. That is, students who successfully complete all subjects in four years will be awarded a B.S. degree, while dropouts will be awarded a certificate, diploma or B.Sc., depending on the subjects completed.

Levels of study:

Foundation Certificate � 8 subjects

Diploma in Programming or Data Science - 6 subjects each and 2 Projects each in both Programming and Data Science

B.Sc., in Programming and Data Science

B.S., in Data Science and Applications

Credit Mode:

2 to 4 'credits' are awarded for each subject and project. Accordingly, 32 credits are awarded at the Foundation level, 54 credits at the Diploma level, 28 credits each at B.Sc., and B.S., levels.

A student is awarded a degree according to the total credits earned against the subjects completed. A student who secures a total of 142 credits is awarded a B.S.

Admission Method:

Admissions are carried out in two modes namely Regular Entry and JEE Entry. All the students wanting to get admission in this course need to complete 4 weeks of 'Coursework'. Then those seeking admission through Regular mode must clear the qualifying examination conducted by the educational institution.

JEE candidates will have to participate in a 4-hour quiz after completing the 4-week 'coursework'. Based on the marks obtained, students may select the 4 subjects to be offered in the first term.

Duration: Need to successfully complete all the prescribed subjects within 3 years to 6 years to obtain a B.S. degree.

Qualifications: Must have studied Maths and English in 10th standard. Further, should have completed three years diploma course or 12th standard or equivalent course. In addition, students currently studying in college can pursue this course as a second degree. Graduates and working professionals can also join. There is no age limit.
