National Eligible Test (NET) is a national level eligibility test to be taken up to work as an Assistant Professor in colleges and universities and to carry out research studies with scholarship. 


Importance: National Testing Agency (NTA) have been authorized to conduct this examination twice a year on behalf of the University Grants Commission. NET is a national level eligibility test to obtain scholarships like NFSC, NFOBC and MANF. Priority is given to those clearing this examination to get admissions for Ph.D. studies. 


Subjects: Including law, this exam is conducted for 83 subjects like Economics, Education, Electronic Science, English, Environmental Sciences, Marine Science, French, Geography, Hindi, History, Home Science, Library and Information Science, Mass Communication and Journalism, Music, Philosophy, Physical Education, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Social Medicine and Community Health, Social Work, Sociology, Tamil, Telugu, Women Studies and Yoga. 


Qualifications: Must have passed in the relevant Master's degree with minimum 55% marks. The maximum age to apply for JRF 'Junior Research Fellowship' is 30 years.


However as per norms, relaxation of age limit and minimum marks are there for special categories. There is no age restriction for the applicants to qualify as Assistant Professor.


Selection Process: This computer-based examination consists of two papers for a total of 300 marks. The first paper will have 50 questions and the second paper will have 100 questions. Every correct answer is awarded 2 marks. There is no 'Negative' mark for a wrong answer.


The first paper will test the student's knowledge in teaching and research methods. The second paper will have questions in 'objective' format in relation to the specialization subject. Questions will be asked in English and Hindi languages only.
