Speech and hearing are the basic necessity and capacity of human beings. Normal people do not have any problem in this regard. However, several people in the world have problem with these part of the body. 

There are several with partial disorders like stuttering, staggering, cluttering and Apraxia and few have complete speech impairment. Persons with hearing disability also have problems related to speaking. It is necessary to have a specialized training with a technological back up to remove these disorders. It is provided as a Speech therapy course, which is a treatment through speech training.   

It is part of a health related science. With this treatment process, the impairment found in talking, articulation disorders, language problems can be treated and corrected. After the completion of systematic study in this field, they turn out to be Speech therapist and audiologist. Speech therapy plays an important role among all the paramedical courses that are related to medicine.

As the awareness among the people about speech and audio disorders are increasing the need for the study in this field is greatly improving. The speech therapist assists to speak clearly, bring out right sound and word, and helps to develop proper communication for those affected with speaking ability due to accidents.  

They help to develop good communication for those with delay in speech during early childhood days, stammering, speech disorder from birth, cerebral palsy patients and cleft lip patients. Since patients with speech disorder also have problem with hearing, the field of speech therapy has turned out to be specialized field that deals with patients physiologically and psychosocially.

Speech therapist provides excellent treatment through various techniques like sign language, Augmentative and Alternative communication and lip reading.

Courses:
Specialized studies related to treating and curing speech and hearing impairment are currently provided in several educational institutions in India. In this field, under graduate courses like BSc Speech hearing, BSc., Audiology and Speech language are offered as fundamental course and Post Graduate studies like MSc, Speech Pathology are also offered. In this field, few diploma courses are also offered.

Eligibility:
It is essential to have passed plus two to join in diploma and under graduation courses. Should have completed plus two through science stream to join under graduation course. Should have obtained a minimum of 50 to 60 percent marks. It is essential to have completed under graduation to join in the 3-year MSc course.

Persons with speech and hearing impairments constitute a large part of the human society. Becoming a speech therapist or an audiologist, we get the opportunity to serve the society. Bringing words into the worlds of mute people has a joy of its own; many young hearts who want to do something for humanity will be interested in becoming a speech therapist or audiologist.

Across the globe there is a great demand for experts and professional in this field. They are wanted in Govt and Private Hospitals, clinics and health care centers. Several speech therapists are required in Social welfare departments. Some get the opportunity to work in Universities and Govt agencies. The Speech therapist function as managers in programmes related to speech and hearing.

Several who work as speech pathologist carry out their own practice. They also work as consultants in offices, hospitals, nursing homes and organizations. Audiologists also work in health related offices and schools. Persons with an experience of 3 to 5 years get around Rs 20, 000/ as monthly salary. They get very excellent salary in private corporate hospitals. 

Those who work as speech therapist in foreign countries get excellent salary. They are greatly wanted and respected in countries especially like America and Britain.
