Mumbai: A memorandum of understanding for the establishment of the Centre for Railway Research was signed between Ministry of Railways and the University of Mumbai here.
The MoU was signed at Raj Bhavan, in presence of Governor of Maharashtra Ch Vidyasagar Rao and Union Minister for Railways Suresh Prabhu, an official said.
Union Minister for Heavy Industries Anant Geete, Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha, Maharashtra Minister for Higher and Technical Education Vinod Tawde and Vice Chancellor of the University of Mumbai Rajan Welukar were also present.
According to the MoU, the Centre for Railway Research will offer degree programme, postgraduate programmes and PhD programme in research areas related to Railways and will also involve students in research projects and offer course electives related to Railway technology.
It has been agreed that University of Mumbai will provide education, distribution of facilities for higher education, effective administration, and financial control and impart practical training to the candidates at the varsity's Ratnagiri sub-campus.
"Specialised courses related to Rail road technology at the post-graduate level and sustained research at higher level is the need of the hour, so the professionals graduating from these will not only abreast with the latest technological development in this field, but will be highly skilled human intellectual capital and also provide value addition to technology through their research work," an official from the Mumbai University.
