Computer Aided Design CAD refers to generating of patterns with the help of computer, by bringing together Architecture and the disciplines of Science, Art and workmanship in Engineering.

To the Architects and Engineers engaged in the designing field, this special Designing Department teaches aspects of Designing through the computer based tools.  Both Software and special Hardware are mainly useful in this field.  In the recent CAD package, the techniques like 2D Vector Based Drafting System and 3D Solid and Surface Modeler are in usage.

Creating and developing final and interim designs useful to the consumers, and creating designs that would provide maximum benefit are some of the services that can be done through CAD.  The services of CAD get augmented such as in the producing of accessory parts for the manufacturing units, generating the outline model of the buildings, designing the blueprint of the factories and hospitals.

However, the essential service of the CAD is to generate 3D Models and 2D Designs.  Moreover, the significant service of CAD is seen in the field of Engineering by creating designs right from the Concept Designing up to Layout, investigating the strength of the building structure and producing commodities accordingly by assessing their utility.

Since the products are designed through CAD technique, it is possible to bring down the expenses considerably.  Similarly, it is also possible to create the required building models in a short span of time.  CAD is very useful to generate attractive designs according to the designers ideas which could be seen on the screen, be corrected and stored, and re-view them when required.  Because of these facts, the significance of this field is highly felt at present.

In general, the CAD courses are offered as 3 or 6 months short-term studies.  To pursue this course, a student must have done in plus two Science or Technical courses and must have passed with good scores.  Preference is given more to those who have done either Science or Engineering than to the students of other disciplines, during admission to CAD studies.  Diploma/Degree in Engineering, any of the courses either in Mechanical or Automobile or Electrical done through ITI can also join CAD / CAM courses.

Each educational institution fixes qualification norms for admission.  For example, the Center for Computer Aided Design at Jadavpur, has fixed B. Tech., B.E., AMIE., B.Sc., BCA., BA/ B.Sc., Geography as educational qualification for admission.  A few institutions expect the candidates to have done in B.Sc., Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or Physics as one of the subjects.

After completing CAD / CAM, a person can join service as Engineering Craftsperson.  He has scopes of getting promotions step by step such as Draftsperson, Engineering Technician and so on. Courses like EDEXCEL/ BTECH HNC/D/SQA NC/NVQ/SV Level 3 can be done as part-time courses while in a job.  Experts in the field advise to apply for these courses before taking up a job.

Those who have done studies in this field have job opportunities in Manufacturing Mills, Research Centres and other related organizations.  Since the number of institutions is continuously increasing, there are also good chances of becoming teachers in this field.

CAD / CAM course and training are more beneficial to those who have done Degree / Diploma in Engineering.  Basically, the field has primarily more number of research jobs, followed up by development jobs.  The field has a bright future in terms of salary or income.  The experts of this field easily receive an income of Rs.30 to 50,000/- pm.
