Font Size :

Vitamin B12 deficiency occurs when the body lacks or cannot absorb enough B12 from food, crucial for proper functioning. Adults need at least 2.4 micrograms daily, with higher requirements for pregnant/breastfeeding women and varying needs for children.

Sources include animal products and fortified foods. Approximately 1.5-15% of people aged 20 to 60 globally suffer from B12 deficiency, per John Hopkins University.

Symptoms develop gradually, include fatigue, nausea, weight loss, sore mouth, yellowish skin, numbness, vision issues, memory loss, and neurological symptoms like paresthesia, ataxia, myelopathy, and tinnitus.

Paresthesia involves tingling sensations, ataxia leads to muscle control loss, myelopathy causes spinal cord injury symptoms, and tinnitus results from nerve damage in the ear.

Consult a doctor for treatment if experiencing symptoms.
