Chennai: While the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad has managed to secure a meagre 20 out of the top 1,000 Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced rankers, other such newly-launched IITs have scored a naught—failing to attract even a single topper.

IIT-Bombay was the most-preferred IIT destination among the top scorers this year. Of the top 100 JEE (Advanced) rankers, as many as 65 have chosen IIT-Bombay, with just 30 students opting for IIT-Delhi. Among the 25,000-odd students who have registered for admission this year, however, IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Madras were the top choices, receiving the maximum number of applications. Each seat of IIT-Kharagpur had an average of 186 applications, for IIT-Madras, it was 183, compared to the 164 for the Delhi IIT and 161 for IIT-Bombay.

Among the top 1,000 rankers, one out of four students has chosen the IIT-Bombay. As many as 273 have opted for the Powai campus, while 194 have chosen Delhi. Kharagpur had 107 applications from among the top 1,000 aspirants.

All those who have passed the JEE (Advanced) can choose IIT seats. For the 10,000-odd seats available in the 18 IITs across the country, 28.8 lakh applications were received this year—an average of 280 claims for each of those seats. IIT-Kharagpur received around 2.5 lakh applications.

IIT-Ropar director Sarit K Das was quoted as saying, “The new IITs need more time for anyone to judge them. Institutes take decades and even centuries to become globally established.” However, IIT-Indore was preferred with 15 students enrolled out of top 2,000 rank holders, after IIT-Hyderabad.
