Municipal schools to go solar- 16-Jul-2015

Chennai: Two municipal schools in Kancheepuram have planned to tap solar energy to meet their energy needs. Students of these two schools are also being offered lessons in the advantages of tapping into non-conventional sources of energy.

Solar panels have been installed at Rani Annadurai Municipal Higher Secondary School and the Municipal Middle School. These plants are expected to be functional by next week. According to official sources, the unit at Rani Annadurai Municipal Higher Secondary School is expected to generate 2100 watts, which can power 25 fluorescent tubes and 25 ceiling fans. Municipal chairman Mythili Thirunavukkarasu was quoted as saying that Rs47.25 lakh would be spent to set up solar plants at six more schools.
