Ramadoss: closure of schools not answer- 21-Jul-2015

Chennai: While the state government proposes to shut down 1,200 schools on the ground that students’ attendance was diminishing, PMK leader S Ramadoss has condemned the closure plan, stating that it was not the answer to the problem.

Instead, he advised, the government schools should be converted into model schools. It is known that many government schools lack facilities and fail to provide quality education. As a result, the parents shun government schools and choose private schools for their wards. “Parents have been forced to think that quality education is available only in private educational institutions. Teachers cannot be blamed for their decision. Lack of infrastructure in government schools and the belief among the parents that only English education would make their children successful students,” he said in a statement.

Ramadoss said while private schools had succeeded in attracting students by providing adequate transport facilities, the state government seeks to attract students by opening English-medium classes. “The government should realise that English medium is not answer to the problem when there is no effort to lay the foundation to improve the intellectual growth of students. It should appoint more teachers and ensure basic facilities such as classrooms, laboratories and toilets,” he said.
