Chennai: Tamil Nadu school and college zones have recorded the highest number of road accidents in the country-1,101.

Tamil Nadu is also the only state in the country that has recorded more than 1,000 accidents in these zones in 2014. Chennai alone accounted for 98 accidents, while Coimbatore saw 18 in 2014. Uttar Pradesh with 969 accidents stood second.

The National Crime Records Bureau has for the first time come out with a list of the number of road accidents in areas in and around schools and colleges.

"Most schools start between 8.30 am and 9 am. And, there is a sense of rush during this time when students have to reach school on time. So, parents who drop their children also tend to be careless while driving, and so do students," Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association president R Visalakshi was quoted as saying.

Morning rush, lack of adequate, overcrowdedness and rash-driving are stated as reasons for such high number of accident cases. Moreover, the absence of flyovers in front of schools and colleges are taking a toll on the students. During rush hours, thousands of students cross the roads in front of institutions, where no traffic policemen or signals are available to regulate traffic.
