New Delhi: TERI University has launched a Summer School programme to strengthen Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Urban Settings, which will go on till August 7.

On Monday, the programme titled ‘Managing Risks and Challenges in Urban WASH Service Delivery’ was inaugurated. Organised in partnership with USAID and Coca-Cola Foundation, it is an endeavour to capture the momentum created by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Urban) to enhance the livable environment of cities through practical problem-solving approach.

Inaugurating the event, Rajiv Seth, Acting Vice Chancellor, TERI University said, “Faster rate of growth of population in urban locations in India is creating increasingly severe pressure on the available WASH infrastructure. These require innovative and integrative systems approach. Probably, the time has now come to invest in decentralized water and waste management initiatives, more coherently than ever before. TERI University is striving to bring innovative solutions to these practical challenges, in collaboration with USAID and Coca Cola Foundation, the Summer School is one of such endeavour”.

Rohit Kakkar, Dy Advisor, CPHEEO, Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India said “Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across various schemes coming under the current focus of urban development in India are gaining higher importance. Nearly 70 percent of projects at ULBs relate to water, sanitation and hygiene. In order to enhance the level of capacity of the ULBs, the MoUD has just launched an e-portal. it will help ULB officials gain required knowledge through a number of self-training modules . TERI University and TERI may play important roles by advising on preparation of certain relevant e-modules”.

Ms Neelima Khetan, Head CSR, Coca Cola said, “It’s commendable that ULB officials have taken out time to attend the training workshop. May be this sets in the beginning of greater understanding. The nexus of WASH is critical; we need a far more intensive collaborative effort between the government and private entities”.

Meanwhile pedagogy includes field based practicum for active experiential learning, small group work, policy analysis of urban WASH in India - case study accounts of successes and failures, group presentations and peer led discussions.

The five day programme is being held at TERI University, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. The training programme will witness participation from multiple stakeholders including government officials, NGOs, academicians, corporate sector executives and students.
