Few months back a higher education committee, headed by Prof. Yaspal was established to rejuvenate and renovate the higher education in the country.

This committee recently submitted its report on the developmental aspects of higher education in the country. The following are the highlights of the report..

  • To improve the infrastructure facilities in a country like India were the student population is very high, the committee has told, initially it is necessary uplift 1500 colleges into universities.
  • The reason for the poor functioning of many universities was found that too many colleges are attached to the University.
  • Presently in India, the existing 20, 000 educational institutions are attached with any one university. Hence, the burden on universities is increasing enormously with aspects like education quality, syllabus and examinations.
  • This committee has provided several recommendations to reduce the burden on the universities. The foremost consideration is to uplift the 1500  colleges into universities. To successfully implement this recommendation the committee has told to follow the guidelines provided by the National Commission for Higher Education and Research, NCHER.
  •  The Yaspal committee has also recommended the various different colleges form groups and function as separate university. The committee also recommends autonomous status for good colleges, through which they can decide about the admission, examination and the syllabus.

Educationists believe that soon the Central government would scrutinize and implement the recommendation made by this committee.
