Hyderabad: A 17-year-old student of a private college attempted suicide by jumping off his hostel building allegedly due to pressure from the college management to pay fees, a police official said here.

Pavan N, a second-year intermediate student, who jumped from the third floor of hostel building located in city outskirts on Saturday fracturing both his legs and injuring his back, is undergoing treatment at a hospital here, Adibatla police station inspector T Ashok Kumar said.

Despite being a merit student, Pavan secured less marks in tests conducted last month and he was supposed to pay Rs 20,000 out of the college's Rs 80,000 annual fee, the police official said.

His father Ramchander lodged a complaint with police accusing the college management of harassing his son and not providing good food as well as exerting pressure on  him to pay the pending fee of Rs 20,000, the police official said.

After the complaint, a case was booked under relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act and the Indian Penal Code against the management of the private college located in Bongluru village, the police official said, adding that a probe is on.

Incidentally, last week, Edula Santhosh Reddy (15), a tenth standard student in Karimnagar district of Telangana district, allegedly committed suicide after he felt "humiliated" for not being able to pay his school fees, and his body was found on the railway tracks.
