The Central Footwear Training Institute at Chennai is the primary institution in India to teach Footwear technology. This functions as an autonomous educational institution under the Central Ministry of Small-scale Industries. CFTI, inaugurated in 1957 offers long term, short term, part-time and evening courses of studies related to Leather Products and Footwear Technology.
In 1963, the Central Government started another educational institution for Footwear Technology, with the same nomenclature at Agra. This was announced as an Autonomous institution in 1996.

The CFTI, Chennai gives training in Footwear, Leather Products and Shoe-making to women of the Self Help Groups, by going to their living places itself. The subsidy for this is given by the Tamilnadu Governments Center for Womens Welfare. The course in Diploma in Footwear Design and Production of this Center, is approved by the Lester College of Footwear Technology of Great Britain.
