When students make mistake, some teachers do not wait for a while but go ahead in punishing the student. As a result they fail to understand the root cause of the particular mistake.
It’s true that punishment is necessary for mistakes; but on the other hand if the reason for the mistake is genuine then pardoning is better. I learned this truth from a student named Arun which I hadn’t even read in the books.
After completing my PhD studies in Tamil Literature, I got the opportunity to work as a Tamil teacher in Govt. boys’ higher secondary school in Ramanathapuram. I used get angry with the students for the sake of discipline, learning and for getting less mark in exams.
This incident happened when I was seriously trying to teach as well discipline the student simultaneously in the school over there. I can vividly remember, it was in the year 2005. I was distributing Conduct Certificate to the students of plus two. At that time I scolded Arun badly for failing in the exams. But, sooner, I found from another boy that Arun’s mother passed away few weeks before the exam which was the reason for his failure.
After getting to know the truth, I started to feel bad about my action. From that day onwards I decided not to scold anyone harshly. Instead, here after I decided to understand the mentality of the children, lead them like a friend and then teach the exam. In case they had done mistakes too, I decided probe deeply the reason for bad behavior. And decided not punish anybody.
As a Tamil teacher, I learned this beautiful lesson what literary books did not teach me. Arun’s Incidence taught me great lesson for contemporary life as well as the future days to come.I
I keep remembering Arun very frequently after this incident.
