We see that for the past few years there is an increase in the number of persons going from their own lands to foreign countries to take up higher education.

A total of 28 lakh persons from India go out for foreign education. Two thirds of people desiring foreign studies prefer to take up education in 6 countries in order, namely, America, Britain, France, Australia, Germany and Japan. That Germany and Japan are included in this list is a surprising factor.

China stands in the first place and India, second in sending their countrymen for overseas education.   China by sending 4 lakhs and 21 thousand people per annum and India, 1 lakh 53 thousand and 300 people per year take the first two positions.
1 lakh and 5300 persons from Korea, 77 thousands and 500 from Germany and 54 thousands from Japan go abroad.  This is the data of 2007.

According to the 2009 Report of the UNESCO Global Education Digest girl students ratio has increased from 46 to 49 %.  To figure out region-wise students going abroad, it is only from West Europe 41% of students go to foreign nations to take up studies.  24% from North America, 18% from East Asia and Pacific region go abroad.  In the single country America, about 21% are foreigners doing higher studies this is an  amazing information.

Though the students desire to go abroad for higher studies, they prefer to be in their dependent regions.  77% of the students from West Europe who go abroad want to continue their studies only in a place belonging to their region.  But, 1.3% students from South and West Asia alone want to do their studies in their own region. Others wish to go to distant countries only.

Earlier, 71% of the Indian students going abroad went to USA.  Apart from this, the other students went to UK and Australia.  But, of late Australia, Germany, New Zealand and UK have become our students preference.

There is also a change in the long cherished attitude that USA is the target for higher studies.  At present, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa have emerged as important countries for higher studies.  Apart from these nations, countries like China, South Korea and New Zealand are becoming new goals.  India has procured 1.8% in the student ratio going abroad for studies.  Out of 100 students, just one student from India goes abroad. But, it is significant that India is in the second place in the total calculation globally.
