Annamalai University is a distinct university with the rural ambience and has  total facilities with all departments incorporated for higher education.

The reason behind the setting up of this university and its marvelous growth is due to the far-reaching vision, sound knowledge, superior thoughts and compassionate heart of Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar to defend the public interest.

Sri Meenakshi College instituted in the year 1920 at the eastern side of  Chidambaram, the Temple City, blossomed as the Annamalai University of today.  Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar donated 300 acres of land and an unimaginable amount of Rs.2 lakhs towards the cause of education.  He also bequeathed the building, land, hostel and library of Meenakshi College to Annamalai University.  In the year 1929, he, who was the initiator of  the Annamalai University, became the Pro-Chancellor of the same .university.

During his tenure as Pro-Chancellor for 20 years, he paid great attention to the growth of each and every department.  He personally identified the erudite scholars, brought them to the University and made them the heads of the departments.

After the demise of Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar, his son, Raja Sir Muthiah Chettiar became the Pro- chancellor.  He began to develop the university in various areas with innovative spirit, new strategy and high aim.  His desire to enlarge the field of higher education in all spheres ahead of boundaries, equipped the way for launching Medicine, Agriculture, Engineering Commerce and Dental.   His wish to bring Distance education to increase the knowledge of all sects of people was fulfilled in the year 1979.  In the year 1984, his son Sri M.A.M. Ramasamy turned out to be his successor.

This university is now functioning in a vast span  at greater of 1000 acres.  Diverse departments of the university function independently and collectively and organize seminars in which the scholars,  teachers and students interact with each other exchange views to initiate novel ideas and new researches.

The chief objective of Raja Sir Muthiah Chettiar for starting Distance Education is to create awareness among people in addition to improving the standard of. Education.  Sri M.A.M.Ramasamy has brought in fascinating changes in the field of Science, Tamil, Literature, Arts, Music and Culture. He has also begun a new Medical College in the campus.  To encourage and motivate the research scholars, he has widened the lab facilities of the departments and tries to establish a good rapport between the research scholars and the industries. These new researches have paved way for multi-departmental education.  Some of the most important Postgraduate courses are--Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Management Studies.  Certificate and Degree courses are also made available.

He conducts the Medical College as effectively as the Dental College established earlier. To render service to mankind, he has established service centres such as Raja Muthiah Heart Foundation, Raja Muthiah Blood Donation Bank, Emergency Cardiac Relief Service, Artificial Organ Replacement Center and Youth Red Cross society.  At present, the university has 25 integrated P.G. courses (5 years) for History, Traditional Agriculture, Advanced Information Technology, Software Engineering, Communication, Microbiology and Environmental sciences.

The Correspondence Course and Continuing Education started in the year 1979 is now running under the name of The Directorate of the Distance Education program and thus renders educational service. The astonishing growth and achievement over the last 29 years proudly demonstrate its reputation.
