Clarify stand on relaxation to OBC in admissions: JNUSU to varsity- 18-May-2016
New Delhi: With the exams for admission to various courses offered by JNU underway, the varsity's students union has approached the administration demanding a clarification on its stand on relaxation to OBC candidates in entrance test and eligibility criteria.
A standing committee of the university had last month decided to do away with relaxation to OBC candidates in entrance examination for M.Phil and Ph.D courses from the coming academic session but said they will be entitled to a concession of 5 marks in the eligibility criteria.
However, the decision was not placed before the Academic Council (AC) which is the statutory decision making body as the Vice Chancellor had adjourned the last meeting following ruckus between students, teachers and the administrative officials.
"While the entrance exams are going on across the country, confusion still looms over OBC reservation and deprivation points to be given in selection process of students. We request that the AC meeting is convened and the varsity makes clear the stand on the issue," said JNUSU joint secretary Saurabh Sharma.
Following a letter to the administration seeking clarification, Registrar Pramod Kumar informed him that the next AC meeting has been scheduled for May 27 and the issue will be placed on its agenda.
So far, the university treated both OBC and General candidates at par with regard to eligibility criteria for admissions to various courses. They needed to have secured a minimum of 55 per cent marks in the qualifying examination.
However, the university offered a 10 per cent relaxation to OBC candidates at the entrance examination or interview stage.
The OBC students have been demanding a concession at both the stages since long. The union members staged demonstrations last month demanding rollback of the decision.
JNU has reduced the compulsory grace points given to women candidates in the amended admission policy.
