IIT Hyderabad celebrates its 5th Annual Convocation - 9-Aug-2016

Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) hosted its 5th Annual Convocation on Saturday 6th August 2015, on its permanent Campus at Kandi, Sangareddy District, Telangana State.

Sh. A.S. Kiran Kumar, Chairman, ISRO was the Chief Guest and delivered the Convocation address. The ceremony was presided over by Sh. B.V.R. Mohan Reddy, Chairman, Board of Governors – IIT Hyderabad, and Executive Chairman – CYIENT.

IIT Hyderabad, ranked 7th in the National Institute Rankings Framework (NIRF) rankings this year, is increasingly becoming popular with students as a preferred institute among the newer IITs.

IITH has crossed another milestone this year by awarding degrees to a total of 449 students.

7 Students were awarded dual degrees in B.Tech & M.Tech and the ceremony also saw its first batch of Masters in Design (M. Des.) and first batch of B.Tech. Civil Engineering graduates.

Prof. U.B. Desai, Director, IIT Hyderabad said, “I congratulate all the faculty and students for their exceptional work and efforts that has brought us the 7th position in the NIRF Rankings of MHRD. We are also a preferred Institute amongst the newer IITs. It is indeed a very special Convocation because IIT Hyderabad has crossed the 2000 student mark; we have a total of 2046 students currently. Moreover, we are graduating the first batch of B.Tech in Civil Engineering, the first batch of Master of Design (M.Des.) students, and the fact we are graduating 42 Ph.D.s. We wish our graduating students the very best in all their endeavors in life.”
 
The Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Hyderabad, Mr. B.V.R. Mohan Reddy commended the institute, saying, " Convocation is an important event in everyone’s life and I’d like to congratulate all the students and faculty on this special occasion. IIT-Hyderabad is contributing substantially to research with 49% of 442 students graduating today being Post-Graduates and PhDs. This is a reflection of emphasis being put on research at IIT Hyderabad. We are also proud to announce that IIT-Hyderabad was able to fill all 240 seats this year, perhaps for the first time after it was established in 2008.”

The Institute also gave away the following Gold / Silver Medals to the eligible students:
1. President of India Gold Medal for securing highest overall CGPA in B.Tech.

2. Institute Gold Medal for securing highest overall CGPA in M.Sc.

3. Institute Gold Medal for securing highest overall CGPA in M.Tech.

4. Gold Medal for excellence in Academics & Co-Curricular Activities.

5. Silver Medals for securing highest CGPA in their departments in respective program

Another added feature of the Convocation this year was that the Graduation Costume was also given a makeover, where the conventional black robes and the graduating caps made way to new robe designed by Prof. Deepak Mathew, Head of Department - Design at IIT Hyderabad.

The skills of local Pochampally craftsmen have been utilized to weave the design of the costume.
