            I am Studying Plus-Two science group. What are the career prospects for a clinical perfusionist?

 

            A Clinic perfusionist is a medical professional educated and trained in the science of extracorporeal circulation. He works closely with surgeons and anaesthesiologists in the delivery of care, primarily to the cardiac surgical patients.

 

            The perfusionist is trained in physiologic principles and techniques to maintain homeostasis and must be knowledgeable and skilled in the conduct of extracorporeal circulation to ensure the safe management of physiologic functions during operative procedures.

 

            During an open heart operation, the cardiopulmonary bypass (or heart-lung) machine maintains the patients life by taking over the functions of the heart and lungs. Perfusion technologists set up and operate the heart-lung machine and other sophisticated equipment used in the operating room. In addition, perfusionists, directed by the surgeon and anaesthesiologist, are responsible for regulating the patients levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide; for measuring selected laboratory values such as blood cell count; and for monitoring circulation.

 

            At times, perfusionists administer anaesthetic or other pharmaceutical agents through the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit. To perform these tasks, perfusionists must thoroughly understand the bodys circulatory system and must be able to operate complex equipment.

 

            Perfusion technology is a challenging profession, and the demand for qualified perfusionists continues nationwide.

 

            I Would like to know about a neuro-electro-physiology course and the career prospects.

           

A course in neuro-electro-physiology enables students to asses the patient and plan various electro-diagnostic procedures and implement them. The candidate thus trained, is called as a neuro-electrophysiology technologist, who is an integral part of the neurology team.

 

            The student will be able to achieve technical skills needed to conduct various diagnostic procedures and arrive at interpretations. He/she will be trained in the EEG lab, plan montages, and do the recording without artifacts and should also be well versed with the technical aspects and preparations of provisional reports.

 

            The students would get familiarised with semilogy of various seizure types, giving first aid in case of emergency and seek timely medical help when needed.

 

            In the neuro-physiology lab, they can assist neurologists in Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NVC) procedures and get an opportunity for basic interpretation of the findings.

 

            Theoretical, technical and basic knowledge of procedures like Visual Evoked Potential (VEP), Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SS EP), Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) will be taugh during the course.

 

            Further, the student will learn to conduct various clinical and technical tests in the autonomic lab.
