In India, IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) and IIIT (Indian Institute of Information Technology) are the few educational institutions doing extremely well in the higher education sector.

Currently, seven IITs are functioning in India. The Union Ministry for Human Resource Development has given approval for few more IITs. Similarly, the planning commission has given approval for twenty new IIITs to come up through Public Private partnership. Currently there are only four IIITs functioning in the country.

The proposed new IIITs are expected to come up in Delhi, Chennai, Trivandrum, Banglore, Jammu, Chandigarh, DehraDhun, Luchnow, Patna, Shillong, Kolkotta, Ahmedabad, Indore, Nagpur, Bhuvaneshwar, Pune, Vishakapattinam, Mysore, Manglore, and Coimbatore. These places have not yet been finalized.

The State government and private establishments should share the total budget for the newly proposed IIITs, the planning commission stated. It is likely that the new IIITs would play an important role in the development of IT technology in India.

IIIT conducts UG, PG courses and PhD studies. NASSCOM has prepared full-fledged report on establishing these new IIIT.

NASSCOM report: As per the report the state government has to provide 100 acres of land at free of cost. The budget fixed for establishing one IIIT is fixed at Rs 30 crores. The state has to provide a maximum of Rs 14.9 crores and similarly the private companies contribution should be minimum of Rs15.1 Crores. Further, the state government has to provide Rs 100 crores to manage the institution.

The repayment of this amount should be done in 10 years. The salary of the IIIT professor would be fixed based on the individual capacity.

These were the highlights of NASSCOM report. This report has again been sent to planning commission for further discussion.
