The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936, as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work.
In 1944, the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. It was recognised as a Deemed University by the Government of India in the year 1964.
Since its inception, TISS has been responding to the changing needs of the social and educational system in the country and has gone far beyond the initial concern of social work education.
This institution has three branches functioning with Mumbai as its headquarters. The Main Campus spreading over 10 acres of land comprises the Schools of Social Work, and Health Systems Studies, a part of the School of Social Sciences as well as the Independent Centres of Lifelong Education, Media and Cultural Studies, and Research Methodology. The other branches are located on a land covering over 11.05 acres at Maldi and Naoroji in Mumbai
The School of Rural Development is situated in the Northwest hills of Tuljapur, Osmanabad District, on Apsinga Road. This campus spreads across a landscape of 100 acres. Another branch is located in Guwahati.
Apart from this, for the Hyderabad Campus of TISS, the Honble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, unveiled foundation stone on April 9, 2008.
This institution, covering over 65 acres will be situated in Mahbubnagar District. It is expected that the TISS campus will be operational by 2010.
