Department of woman studies in Bharatthiyar University, Coimbatore has started to provide MA woman studies from the current academic year 2009 - 2010.

Woman empowerment, making way for economic development for woman, studying about the social status of woman, gender discrimination, providing self-employment, obtaining employment opportunities, developing leadership qualities, awareness creation on woman rights, self awareness and decision making are the main objectives of this department. 

The department director, Jayarathinam spoke regarding this course.
 
Students are offered diploma studies in Industrial relations and labour welfare. Those students completing two-year PG studies are also provided with the Diploma. 

Students living below poverty line and pursuing full time PG courses are exempted from paying education fees under free education scheme of Bharathiyar University.  Full time regular students from backward community, most backward community pursuing this degree course are provided with government scholarships. For those students from very poor economic condition, the university facilitates to obtain government education loan. Students who have completed any Under Graduate degree are eligible to apply for M.A Woman studies. Both, men and women can apply for the course.

More than thousand books related to gender, research articles are available in the department. The department carries out activities like providing Post graduation studies, research studies (M.Phil, Ph.D), training and developmental activities. 

Employment is a guarantee in national and international organizations, Government based NGOs, medical counselor, Tamil Nadu government welfare games, Woman development scheme advisor and social worker, as for as job opportunities are concerned, he said.

Other activities of Woman studies department:

Presently the following researches are being carried out in the department.

 Health related to woman reproduction. 

 Awareness of working class woman.

 SHG woman entrepreneurship development skills.

 Training provided to nurses on HIV/ AIDS.

 Problems of migrant girl children.

 Mental health of woman.

 Gender discrimination
